"And" versus "Or":
Filter Tip #9:
On the BASIC filter screen "And" goes vertically, "Or" goes horizontally:
- "AND"
- Is added to your filter vertically/downwards on the Basic filter grid. (See red arrow on screenshot, Term AND Class)
- This limits your filter more, narrowing down further.
- Lessens the records you will see.
- "OR"
- Is added to your filter horizontally/across on the Basic filter grid, after the WHERE box. (See green box on screenshot, either Term Boys 2024-2025 or Girls 2013-2014)
- Makes the filter less intense by giving it more criterion.
- Adds more records to what you will see.
Filter Tip #10
The filter sentence is read DOWNWARDS starting from the first column on the left and then again to the next column DOWNWARDS and so on.
In the above example the filter is reading "Term Boys 2024-2025 & Class 10th Boys & Student Status Student OR Term Girls 2013-2014 & Class 1st Grade & Student Status Applicant".
Remember!
When reading the filter sentence you need to repeat both the field name and its operator for each box!
While reading make use there are no opposing criteria.
While reading make use there are no opposing criteria.
- If you want to limit the filter by And plus an Or for all the columns, the criteria needs to be on all of the columns.
- You can leave a blank box on top (or wherever needed) if you don't want this part filtered.
For Example, the screenshot below depicts a blank space on top of "Tuition 14-15":This works! The filter will pull "ANY pledge in Tuition 14-15 Occasion OR Pledges less then $100 AND in Book Fee 14-15 Occasion".
(Note the ANDS & ORs at work here!) - Sometimes an "AND" in your filter does NOT makes sense in the BASIC filter tab.Why would an AND not make sense in the Basic filter tab?The Basic filter tab is filtering for "A SINGLE" So a single entity cannot have two opposing criteria.
Example: This filter will not work because a pledge cannot have two Occasions.
